NEW YORK, May 8, 2015 This Monday, May 11th at 10:30pm ET/7:30pm PT, Al Jazeera America will debut “Ali Velshi on Target,” a new, nightly current affairs program hosted by award-winning journalist and Al Jazeera America anchor Ali Velshi.

On Monday night’s debut episode, Velshi will explore the debt crisis in Greece with an interview with former Pimco Chief Executive Mohamed El-Erian and original reporting from Velshi’s recent trip to Greece where he focused on the nation’s controversial austerity programs and how Greece’s recession led to a 26% unemployment rate. The show will also cover New York’s Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA), which recently made waves when it voted to ban all political advertising on subways, buses and commuter rails. MTA board member Allen Cappelli speaks to Velshi about why he voted against the measure, and what the ban could mean for free speech.

“I’m looking forward to launching ‘Ali Velshi on Target,’” said Velshi, “and continuing my journalism work at Al Jazeera America which is focused on speaking truth to power and giving voice to the voiceless.”

“Ali Velshi on Target” will air weeknights on Al Jazeera America and capitalize on Velshi’s experience as global financial journalist, economic commentator and financial author. Through debate, interviews and on-the-ground reporting, Velshi and his team of experts provide context and analysis around current political and economic issues.

The show continues daily segments focused on signature themes, including implications of the global economy for America, the nation’s infrastructure, gaps in wealth, race and gender, and the influence of special interest groups in politics and the economy.

Velshi was previously the host of the nightly show “Real Money with Ali Velshi” on Al Jazeera America. He joined Al Jazeera America in 2013 from CNN, where he served as the channel’s Chief Business Correspondent, anchor of CNN International’s “World Business Today” and the host of CNN’s weekly business roundtable “Your Money.”

Born in Nairobi and raised in Toronto, Velshi graduated from Queen’s University in Canada with a degree in Religion. He is the author of “Gimme My Money Back” (Sterling and Ross, 2008) and co-author with CNN’s Christine Romans of “How to Speak Money” (Wiley, 2010).
