A powerful story of betrayal and redemption, “In God We Trust” takes an in-depth look at the Madoff crime on the sixth anniversary of the arrest of Bernard L. Madoff. The film chronicles the journey of Eleanor Squillari, a woman who went to work every day believing she was working for a great company and a great man. For twenty-five years, she sat fifteen feet away from Madoff as his personal secretary. She never imagined he was perpetrating the largest financial crime in history. On December 11, 2008, her life as she knew it was destroyed…until she decided to do something about it to help bring about justice.
Produced, written and directed by Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson, “In God We Trust” unearths the truth behind the fabled man and complex scam. Shot in real time in New York City, this film presents an intimate portrait of a remarkable woman who defies the odds to do what she believes is right in the face of extraordinary adversity.
“In God We Trust,” which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, examines how Squillari unwittingly participated in the massive Ponzi scheme which operated right under nose. Years of Eleanor’s files and personal memories as well as her dogged pursuit for the facts begin to unwind the crimes as she aids the FBI investigation and struggles to determine which of her formerly trusted co-workers were involved. As she probes deeper into the deceit, Eleanor finds that Bernard’s Ponzi scheme was only the beginning -- a small fraction of the criminal activity that took place every day for decades. Along with Eleanor, viewers learn the real truth of this massive crime, including who was involved, who benefited and who was the likely mastermind behind this enormous fraud.
“In God We Trust” is produced by The Halcyon Company and Verisimilitude in association with Magic Hour Entertainment.
Victor Kubicek is a writer, producer and director. “In God We Trust” is his third feature film. A graduate from Columbia University where he majored in Economics and Philosophy and a former member of the American Stock Exchange, Victor has always been interested in the relationship between finance and human behavior. When he and co-director Derek Anderson met Eleanor Squillari back in 2009, he knew that he had found the perfect subject to explore these themes.
Derek Anderson began his career in advertising where he became known as the creator and marketer of some of the world’s most successful brands. Derek believed the way to capture the hearts and minds of the audience was to engage them in a compelling story to transport them to a world they would want to be a part of. Filmmaking was a natural next step for him after advertising. As a writer, director and producer Derek has been able to explore subjects from a unique American subculture in “Cook Off” to the post apocalyptic world of “Terminator Salvation” and now the underbelly of the world of finance in “In God We Trust”.
