GOP picks new House majority leader

Calif. Rep. Kevin McCarthy tapped as No. 2 party leader in House after Eric Cantor's fall to tea party dark horse

Republicans in the House of Representatives on Thursday chose Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California as the chamber's next majority leader, a Republican aide announced.

McCarthy, currently the party's No. 3 leader in the House, defeated Rep. Raul Labrador in the secret ballot contest to succeed Eric Cantor as the No. 2 House Republican.

Cantor is stepping down as majority leader July 31 after his surprise loss to tea-party-backed challenger Dave Brat in a Virginia primary election last week.

In his first public appearance since last week's victory, Brat said on Tuesday that he was "hitting the ground running" in his general election campaign.
