Bay Area man arrested for allegedly shooting at cops

The incident in South San Francisco comes amid heightened tensions over attacks on police elsewhere

A San Francisco Bay Area man accused of shooting at two police officers has been apprehended after a manhunt that lasted for more than seven hours.

South San Francisco police said they arrested Ivan DeJesus Gomez, 23, on suspicion of attempted murder after searching throughout Thursday morning. Neither he nor the officers were injured.

Officers responding to a 3 a.m. report of gunshots were searching the neighborhood when someone opened fire on them. Police shot back, and the man ran away.

Gomez, of South San Francisco, was found hiding in the area of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. A gun hasn't been located.

Pictures of the search on a Twitter feed on the local KGO Radio station website showed a SWAT vehicle and searchers in camouflage kit in the suburban neighborhood.

Representatives from the South San Francisco Police Department were not immediately available to provide more details and the department's statement gave no motive for the alleged shooting incident.

The shooting comes amid heightened tensions nationwide over attacks on police elsewhere in the country after the killings of unarmed black men by white officers in Missouri and New York.

A St. Louis man was charged Thursday with making threats against police and the St. Louis City Justice Center on Twitter.

Jason Valentine, 35, faces 10 felony counts of making a terrorist threat, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's office said Thursday.  He is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bail, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

On New Year’s Eve, police in San Jose were deployed in pairs because of threats against officers, according to Bay Area media.

This week in Los Angeles, two officers came under fire, initially stirring concerns they had been ambushed just days after two New York City officers were killed on Dec. 20. But an investigation found that the LAPD officers had driven into gang-related gunfire on Dec. 28.
