Autistic student's self-advocacy speech stopped short
A 14-year-old student with a form of high-functioning autism was cut off while delivering a speech to his town's board of education on what he believed was an unfair two-day suspension. Christian Ranieri, a student from Northport, New York, said his Individualized Education Program (IEP) was delayed and incorrectly implemented by his school. According to Christian, his teacher refused to discuss an IEP error and he raised his voice in frustration, resulting in his suspension. Due to privacy laws preventing discussion of disciplinary actions, the teacher's perspective on what transpired is not known.
