The White House says the government's health care website received 375,000 visitors by noon on Monday, the first business day after the Obama administration declared the problem-plagued site fixed.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said the administration was expecting just such a rush of traffic on Monday.
The launch of the website on Oct. 1 was widely criticized for glitches and delays. The administration spent the next two months working to upgrade the computer system.
In late November, the House Energy and Commerce Committee made public emails between the website's developers detailing problems with the site. According to the email exchanges, HealthCare.gov could not accommodate 500 users at one time before the site's Oct. 1 launch.
Consumers continued to experience delays on Monday. However, users were placed in a queue and advised when to return for speedier service – instead of getting an error message as before – Carney said.
