Web-users seemed keen to offer the British monarchy a helping hand with baby names Monday, as a flurry of suggestions poured into Twitter with the hashtag #RoyalBabyNames.

Funny man Steve Martin expressed a desire to be the little royal’s namesake.

Most suggestions weren’t especially serious -- or polite.

Some not-so-willing parties seemed to get caught up in the royal baby madness.

The royals likely won't choose a name as radical as Gordito or Qwikster. But we do know, based on precedent, that they may choose anywhere between three to seven names.

The little royal's father has four: William Arthur Philip Louis. His grandfather's full name is Charles Philip Arthur George. His great-grandmother's full name is Elizabeth Alexandra May.

"The name can take on cultural significance," wrote Danica Kirka of the Associated Press. "Arthur, the middle names of both Prince Charles and Prince William, evokes the legendary King Arthur and tales of chivalry – a favorite theme ingrained in British literature."

Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936, was christened Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David – the last four were patron saints of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales respectively.

While the United Kingdom waits for word of its future monarch's name, Britons are placing bets on what the royal child will be called.

Ladbrokes betting company took 50,000 bets in the hours after the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton went into labor on Monday.

Company spokesman Alex Donohue said the public rushed to put small amounts of money – such as a pound – on the royal infant's name because they "want to be involved."

"Never underestimate the British public's obsession with the royal family," he said.

The public may have to wait, though. It is not uncommon for the palace to take its time to choose just the right name.
