Two JFK airport workers exposed to phosphoric acid

Acid came from a suspicious package at JFK, which federal authorities determined was a box of beauty supplies

Federal Authorities have determined that a suspicious package at New York's City's John F. Kennedy International Airport was nothing more than a box of beauty supplies.

Concerns over the package that originated from China arose after two Customs and Border Protection workers smelled an odor eminating from the package and were made ill after coming into contact with phosphoric acid from one of the products, which appeared to be a type of skin cleanser.

This prompted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to conduct tests on the package out of "an abundance of caution."

Earlier reports said the package tentatively tested positive for VX nerve gas, an odorless and tasteless gas used in chemical warfare, but that further tests were needed before an official confirmation could be issued.

FBI spokesman J. Peter Donald told The Associated Press that the two Customs and Border Patrol employees were screened as well, and that the scene has been cleared by the FBI.
