The Beaver Creek wildfire in Idaho has burnt through 104,000 acres of parched sagebrush, grasslands and pine forests in the Sawtooth National Forest since it was sparked by lightning on August 7.
More than 1,100 firefighters have been assigned to the ever-shifting blaze, which continues to vex fire managers. Containment, the portion of the wildfire's perimeter firmly enclosed by fire breaks, remained at less than 10 percent.
Currently, more than 800,000 acres are burning in the western states and Alaska, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Eight new large fires have been reported this week.
