'Keep the peace, we all are hurting': Eric Garner's family urges calm

Protests after NYC grand jury decides not to indict officer over chokehold death; grieving parents urge non-violence

STATEN ISLAND, New York — Protests broke out in New York City on Wednesday following news that a Staten Island grand jury had decided not to indict a police officer over the chokehold death of Eric Garner in July.

The decision comes little more than two week after a similar ruling in Ferguson, Missouri sparked violent unrest.

Fearing similar scenes in New York, Garner's mother Gwen Carr and wife Esaw Garner urged demonstrators to keep actions peaceful. In an emotional exhange, the dead man's stepfather Ben Carr calmed down one man with the words: "Let's keep the peace, we all are hurting."
