Operation Protective Shield was launched by the Israeli military against Gaza on Monday, at least a dozen Palestinians have died in air and naval strikes. Armed groups in Gaza have been shooting rockets at southern Israel, and several people have been lightly wounded.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that the Cabinet had discussed calling up an additional 40,000 reservists in addition to the 1,500 already called up in preparation for a possible ground invasion into Gaza.
Hamas has called the strikes a "grave escalation" and promised retaliation.
