Greek police arrest four in connection to Belgian attack plot

The ringleader of a recently dismantled cell in Belgium may be among those arrested

Greek police have arrested four people in connection to a foiled plot to attack Belgian police, including one who Belgian authorities believe could be the ringleader, a senior police official told Al Jazeera on Saturday.

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind of a Belgian cell that was dismantled in a recent operation, may be among those arrested. Greek police have sent photos, fingerprints and DNA material to Belgium in order to determine whether the man who “matches the description” of Abaaoud is indeed him.

The four were arrested Saturday afternoon after Interpol sent arrest warrants for them to Greek police on Friday, the source said.

The men had been living in Greece for about four months, he said. The link to Athens was apparently established by telephone surveillance by Belgian authorities and the CIA.

The source added that further arrests could be imminent based on numbers found on the cell phone of the chief suspect.
