Dr. Abdulrahman Ali Awale works in a bare-bones clinic to overhaul the African country’s treatment of mental illness

After decades of civil war, an estimated one-third of Somalia’s population suffers from mental-health problems, according to the World Health Organization. With only three months of training and a $14,000 donation, Dr. Abdulrahman Ali Awale started Habeb Mental Health Hospital in Mogadishu to overhaul the country’s treatment and perception of mental illness.
