Mexico is one of the world's most dangerous countries for journalists. It was ranked the 10th deadliest country for the press last year, according to advocacy group the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Gregorio Jiménez de la Cruz, one of last year's victims, covered crime for newspapers in his home state of Veracruz, a drug-trafficking hub in the south of Mexico where collusion between organized crime and politicians has made practicing journalism particularly dangerous.
AJ+ traveled to Veracruz and followed photojournalist Félix Márquez and Jorge Sánchez, an activist calling for a formal investigation into the murder of his father, Moisés Sánchez, a former newspaper owner.
