The Red Brigade: Rape survivors fight sexual violence in India

AJ+ profiles young women who are demanding better policing and public awareness of sexual violence

At age 6 or 7, Afreen was first raped by her stepbrother at night. She didn't dare tell anyone for fear of retaliation. Years later, Afreen, now a young woman, has a voice. She joined the Red Brigade, an advocacy group that campaigns against sexual violence against women in India.

The issue has been a national flashpoint in India since 2012, when a 23-year-old student from Delhi was gang-raped and murdered on a bus. Women’s rights advocates in India and groups such as the Red Brigade are protesting to demand legal action and an end to impunity for those who commit sexual assault. Red Brigade has launched a petition to increase the number of female police officers on the streets, install surveillance cameras and raise awareness among the public about the epidemic of sexual violence in India.
