Taking on Islamophobia with soccer

In Germany, reeling from anti-Islam protests, a team started by Turkish immigrants has become a force for integration

In 1978, Turkish immigrants in Berlin founded a soccer team called Turkiyemspor. Its players have experienced racism and violence, but the club has thrived and its ambitions have grown. While Germany continues to experience anti-Islam rallies, Turkiyemspor is an integrated team with people from many backgrounds. The captain told AJ+ the team wants “to show that we are open to different cultures and people and that they are most welcome here.”
