Refugees [un]welcome: Hospitality and hostility greet migrants in Germany

Supporters of asylum seekers in Germany face off against a surging tide of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim protesters

Anti-immigration protests and suspected arson attacks on shelters have left many migrants in Germany unnerved. Meanwhile surging numbers of migrants fleeing war and poverty have worsened conditions in the country's asylum centers. Even so, Germany remains a better alternative than the conditions the refugees fled — war in Syria being a major driver of new migration to Europe. But amid open hostility from some, there are pockets of compassion. Some Germans are inviting refugees into their homes, as part of a nonprofit drive to provide subsidized rent for immigrants living in the spare rooms of Germans.
