In 2009, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to close Guantánamo Bay prison within one year. But seven years later, the facility in Cuba where the U.S. houses suspects captured during its "war on terror" remains open. What’s more, many of those detained since the facility's opening 14 years ago have never been charged or tried, and a number remained detained despite being cleared for release.
Dena Takruri of AJ+ examines why the president has yet to fulfill his promise to close the prison, which has become infamous for harsh interrogation, torture and inmate hunger strikes.
