The federal government’s tempered response to the occupation of a U.S. national wildlife refuge in Oregon by an armed group of white ranchers and their supporters have critics crying foul. Citing “white privilege,” some observers of the weeklong standoff have accused authorities of taking a less-forceful approach to the situation than they would have if the occupiers were black or Muslim.
