AFP East Africa chief photographer Carl de Souza shot this image on Tuesday of riot cops "clash[ing] with students inside a classroom in Nairobi University," according to his caption. Hundreds of students took to the streets protesting proposed increases to tuition and school fees. As the demonstrations grew, students threw rocks and other debris at riot police, who fired teargas in return. According to the Daily Mail, police then attempted to corral students back onto the campus with crude wooden batons. Additional images by de Souza and other media show students being beaten and detained in various campus buildings.
