School shootings: 74 … and still counting

Shootings at K-12 schools in red, at colleges/universities in purple.

With today’s shooting at a Portland, Oregon-area high school — which left one student and the shooter dead — America has added another hash mark to its grim tally of school shootings.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy group, which defines a school shooting as “assaults, homicides, suicides, and accidental shootings” that happen “inside a school building or on school or campus grounds,” today’s incident at Reynolds High School marks at least the 74th such example of gun violence since the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, supposedly served as wakeup call to the heavily-armed American psyche.

Everytown has the list, which Huffington Post editor Mark Gongloff mapped and tweeted, and we’ve reproduced it here.

Al Jazeera America put together a timeline of school shootings since Sandy Hook for the first anniversary of the Newtown killings. But that was December — almost 6 months and at least 37 school shootings ago.
