School shootings: 74 … and still counting

With today’s shooting at a Portland, Oregon-area high school — which left one student and the shooter dead — America has added another hash mark to its grim tally of school shootings.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy group, which defines a school shooting as “assaults, homicides, suicides, and accidental shootings” that happen “inside a school building or on school or campus grounds,” today’s incident at Reynolds High School marks at least the 74^th such example of gun violence since the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, supposedly served as wakeup call to the heavily-armed American psyche.

Al Jazeera America put together a timeline of school shootings since Sandy Hook for the first anniversary of the Newtown killings. But that was December — almost 6 months and at least 37 school shootings ago.
