NEW YORK – (April 18, 2013) – Al Jazeera America, the new American news channel that will launch later this year, has hired Andrea Stone and Tony Karon as senior online executive producers for Al Jazeera’s digital team. Stone and Karon will be responsible for managing both U.S. and global coverage for the channel’s website and other digital platforms. Together they will determine the overall editorial direction for the site and both will be based in New York.
“As we’ve said all along, Al Jazeera America is committed to hiring the best, most experienced journalists working in the U.S. news media today and Andrea and Tony are exactly that,” said Ehab Al Shihabi, director of international operations for Al Jazeera. “This great team will ensure that our multi-platform news product will provide clarity through context and will become an important voice in the burgeoning digital media marketplace.”
Andrea Stone, who most recently worked as the senior national correspondent for The Huffington Post, has covered national news for nearly 30 years. Prior to The Huffington Post, Stone was the Washington bureau chief for AOL News and a reporter for USA TODAY, where she covered national news, the Pentagon, Congress, the Middle East, presidential and congressional politics and business.
“Having spent most of my career covering domestic and international news for a major U.S. daily newspaper, I was drawn to Al Jazeera’s commitment to quality and the good old-fashioned journalism that tells both sides of the story,” said Stone. “I am incredibly excited to help lead a talented digital news team that will deploy the latest multimedia tools to provide in-depth and visually compelling stories that Americans need to know.”
Tony Karon comes to Al Jazeera America from TIME Magazine where for the last 12 years he was senior editor for its website. At TIME, Karon was responsible for directing international and domestic coverage of breaking and ongoing news stories. Prior to TIME, Karon was deputy editor for Fox News online where he oversaw a team of editors covering breaking and business news.
