NEW YORK – (July 30, 2013) – Al Jazeera America, the new American news channel that will launch on Aug. 20, today announced that Paul Beban, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, will become the first correspondent in the channel’s new Denver bureau.
Al Jazeera America will be a news, lifestyle and investigative journalism channel that will offer the U.S. audience objective, fact-based and in-depth news focused on issues that are important to everyday Americans. The Denver bureau is one of 12 that the news channel will open in cities across the country.
Marcy McGinnis, Al Jazeera America’s senior vice-president, newsgathering, said that a Denver bureau is key to its mission to cover the U.S. from strategic locations. “Paul Beban understands how vitally important it is to bring news from the Western region to our viewers.”
Before joining Al Jazeera America, Beban worked as a producer for the Al Jazeera English broadcast, Empire. Prior to that, he was a correspondent, producer and writer with ABC News. Beban has won many industry awards including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Feature in a News Magazine; an Emmy Award for Outstanding Analysis of a Business or Financial Story, Long Form; and George Foster Peabody and Alfred I. duPont Awards as a member of the ABC News 9/11 coverage team.
“Paul Beban is exactly the type of journalist we want on our team,” McGinnis said. “His commitment to quality journalism and his dedication to lending a voice to those who need it most will serve our audience well.”
“I’ve seen first-hand Al Jazeera’s commitment to top-tier journalism and reporting in-depth on events,” said Beban. “I am excited to join Al Jazeera America to report on the ground, delivering news and following stories that that will matter most to Americans around the block and across the country.”
