NEW YORK – (July 30, 2013) – Al Jazeera America, the new American news channel that will launch on Aug. 20, today announced that award-winning journalist Jennifer London will become the first correspondent in the channel’s new Los Angeles bu
Al Jazeera America will be a news, lifestyle and investigative journalism channel that will offer the U.S. audience objective, fact-based and in-depth news focused on issues that are important to everyday Americans. The Los Angeles bureau is one of 12 that the news channel will open in cities across the country.
Marcy McGinnis, Al Jazeera America’s senior vice-president, newsgathering, said that a Los Angeles bureau is critical for Al Jazeera America. “Los Angeles is at the leading edge of virtually every political, financial and social issue in the United States today. Our team will be at the forefront bringing in-depth coverage of important stories in Los Angeles and throughout Southern California to our audience.”
Before joining Al Jazeera America, London was a correspondent at KCET, Southern California’s largest public television station. Previously, London was a correspondent for HDNet’s World Report, where she distinguished herself as an investigative reporter covering topics including middle class gang members in Los Angeles and claims of government-sponsored anti-Semitism in Venezuela. She also spent four years as a national correspondent for NBC Network News and MSNBC reporting from Los Angeles, London, New York, New Orleans and Chicago.
London has won numerous awards including an Alfred I. duPont Award, three LA Press Club Awards, a Golden Mike Award and a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. Her work has also earned her an Emmy Award for investigative reporting, in addition to six Emmy nominations.
“Jennifer exemplifies what Al Jazeera America wants in its journalists,” McGinnis said. “She brings extensive experience from the local, national and international arenas while her many distinguished awards are a testament to her commitment to quality journalism.”
“I am excited to continue my work in investigative reporting with Al Jazeera America from Los Angeles and Southern California,” London said. “This is a region full of rich stories and important news, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to tell them in-depth and with relevance for Americans across the country.”
