Nonprofit hospitals charging low-income patients huge fees

Nonprofit hospitals are legally required to provide free care to low-income patients. As a result, they receive major tax breaks. But tens of thousands of patients throughout the country who qualify for free or discounted care are still billed for treatment and are being relentlessly pursued by debt collectors, adding to their pain and suffering.
