Bill Browder got rich by investing in Russian companies through the investment fund Hermitage Capital, which grew to more than $4 billion in assets in 2005. But that year he ran into trouble with Russian authorities and President Vladimir Putin. Browder says the Kremlin threatened to kill him. He was barred from the country, and he and his tax attorney Sergei Magnitsky were accused of tax evasion. Magnitsky was helping Browder expose corruption. Magnitsky was arrested, held in custody for more than a year and then killed. His death, in November 2009, was the catalyst Browder needed for a new mission: to find justice for Magnitsky.
