Amid a national conversation about racism on college campuses, the University of Alabama elected its first black student body president in almost four decades. Making his win even more impressive, Elliot Spillers defeated the Machine, a secret coalition of all-white fraternities and sororities thought to rig elections, both on and off campus. At a school infamous for resisting desegregation more than 50 years ago, many see Spillers' victory as an especially powerful symbol, signaling a new era of tolerance and diversity.
