A migrant’s first call home

While documenting the stories of Syrian refugees who had just arrived in Italy after crossing the Mediterranean, the Compass team noticed a young African man crying. It was clear he wanted to call home. Host Sheila MacVicar lent the young man her cellphone, and our cameras captured the charged moment when he reached his loved ones. We just had no idea what he said. We thought it would take a phone call or two to get the exchange translated. We were wrong. Read about our hunt to interpret his emotional phone call.
