Meet the 87-year-old Maine EMT who is still on the job
A volunteer for the Liberty Fire Department, 87-year-old Edna Mitchell covers some 400 square miles of coastal Maine, handling more than 100 calls a year. In 37 years on the job, that’s meant nearly 4,000 calls. Her interest in emergency medical care goes back to World War II — a time when women were rarely EMTs, firefighters or police officers. Even when she’s had other jobs as a teacher or a farmer, Mitchell always felt that being an EMT was her true calling, carrying her radio with her at all times. In this America Tonight excerpt, Lisa Fletcher talks to Mitchell about why she’s spent four decades responding to medical emergencies.
