Pirate attacks a new concern for Syrian refugees crossing Mediterranean

To escape their war-torn homeland, tens of thousands of Syrian refugees are fleeing by boat from Turkey to the Greek islands. The ride takes a few hours at most, but as the horrific photos of Aylan Kurdi, a toddler who drowned on the way to Turkey, prove, the crossing can be deadly. But in addition to the dangerous seas, many refugees are reporting that they are being attacked by masked men in boats. The men, often in high-powered vessels, board migrants’ rubber rafts and, according to the refugees, rob and beat those on board before disabling the rafts and leaving them adrift. On top of that, many refugees say that they have been harassed, threatened, and in some cases had their engines removed by the coast guards of Turkey and Greece. Sheila MacVicar reports.
