For incarcerated mothers, a fight to stay connected with their children

Arlene Adams’ daughters were 2 and 4 years old when their father attacked late one night. Adams grabbed a knife for protection and took a swing. He dropped dead. As her daughters watched, Adams was arrested and charged with murder. She did two years in prison before her charge was reduced to manslaughter because of years of domestic abuse. In this America Tonight excerpt, Sheila MacVicar talks to Adams about why she is determined to help other women dealing with prison trauma — and how she’s rebuilding a relationship with her children.
