Maine lobstermen in a pinch over low prices, record catch

Maine lobstermen unload their catch at the end of the day.

In Maine, conservation efforts and warmer waters caused by climate change have doubled the state’s annual lobster catch in just eight years.

You might think that would be a good thing for lobstermen.

But the appetite for lobster hasn’t kept up with the increasing supply. Wholesale prices have dropped to record lows while the price of bait and fuel have skyrocketed.

In a report airing in early October, Adam May reported on how Maine’s 5,000 lobstermen – the backbone of the state’s coastal economy – are getting by and hoping that more people start to think of lobster as more than just a dinner splurge.
