How does New Orleans mourn the murder of its children?

The United States can boast of some of the world’s most chilling shooting statistics. But one number is the most harrowing of all. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, a child is murdered or injured by a gun in America every 30 minutes.

Correspondent Sarah Hoye traveled to New Orleans, one of the deadliest cities in the country, to speak with those affected by the seemingly senseless murder of children.

She visits a support group for mothers who have lost children to gun violence.

“Allow someone to get in their ear God, to let them know that they are loved, that they are cared for,” they pray. “So God, we even pray for the perpetrators tonight. We ask that you allow them to know that there is a place called peace that they can get to.”

Hoye speaks to a mother who framed the last thing in her son’s pocket when he was killed: Thirty dollars, and 85 cents.

She also meets with those fighting the violence, like victims’ advocate Tamara Jackson. “It’s beyond just a toddler It’s a community that has embraced crime,” she says. “…And they’re comfortable with vigilante justice, which means as a city we have a problem.”

Most young people are also rejecting the culture of guns and gangs, but many must survive in neighborhoods where it’s all around them. “I know that I don’t wear any shoes that I can’t run in,” says 16-year-old Amara Skinner. “Just in case.”
