One of the world’s most bio-diverse and ecologically important areas-- the Peruvian Amazon--is under attack from a modern day gold rush. Underneath the tropical forest lies subsoil laced with gold, and removing that gold typically means reducing the landscape to a lunar wasteland; leaving behind toxic tracks of soil and water contaminated with mercury.
