Performing for acceptance

Is comedy the cure for Islamophobia? According to a 2012 survey, 41% of Americans have an unfavorable view of Muslims. Several young Muslim-American comedians are now using pop culture in hopes of changing that.  In the documentary, The Muslims are Coming! Dean Obeidallah and Negin Farsad use humor to challenge stereotypes and perceptions. While some feel laughter could be the right medicine to cure intolerance others aren’t so sure. Critics argue self-deprecating humor can backfire and continue misconceptions. Supporters point to the 1980’s sitcom starring Bill Cosby for helping change perceptions of African Americans. But should religious or ethnic groups have to “perform” for those who judge them in order to gain acceptance?
