Retired Army Capt. William Swenson received the highest military honor in a White House ceremony on Tuesday, but the event was mired by speculation that his award was delayed by his past criticism of the Army.

The Afghan war veteran fought for seven hours in a 2009 battle in the Ganjgal valley, but it took four years for him to receive the Medal of Honor. After the battle, Swenson accused the army of mishandling the situation by denying his requests for air support.
