U.S. avocado imports reportedly linked to Mexican drug cartel

In the region of Michoacán in western Mexico, avocado is king, and a Mexican drug cartel known as the Knights Templar has successfully extorted its way into dominating the industry. The cartel has ruled over the avocado business - what some nickname oro verde, or 'green gold' - demanding millions from farmers and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
