Protesters demand closure of Dept. of Defense 'school of assassins'
Demonstrators flocked to Columbus, Ga. over the weekend to demand a U.S. Department of Defense institute be shut down, alleging the school educated and trained human rights violators across Latin America. The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), pictured below, opened in 2001 and is the successor to the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA), which formally closed in 2000 after years of pressure from human rights groups.
