The growing anti-holiday shopping movement

As Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, some are taking a stand against what they believe is the pervasive nature of holiday consumerism. Whether it's a family member missing at the dinner table to work a retail shift or another sacrificing time spent with loved ones to catch Black Friday savings, more people are noticing retailers edge into their leisure holiday time - and are fighting against it.

Many have started Change.org petitions online asking retailers to close on Thanksgiving or change their hours of operation on Black Friday. Some targeted individual companies, including Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Sears.

A few stores have offered perks to make working on a holiday more bearable, including staff lunches, holiday discounts, and relaxed dress codes. Yet some say these measures don't do enough and only go to highlight other grievances by retail employees, such as low wages and irregular schedules.

In one case out of Elkhart, Indiana, the general manager of a Pizza Hut sent a letter of protest to the company when it demanded that he open on Thanksgiving or resign. He argued that Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only days in the year that the store is closed and his employees are guaranteed time with their families. Below are excerpts of his letter to Pizza Hut executives:
