Muslim. Jersey girl. Comic superhero?
Marvel Comics announced on Wednesday that the new Ms. Marvel comic character will be Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen from New Jersey. She is the first prominent Muslim character to be featured in a monthly comic series.
Ms. Marvel was first introduced in the 1960s as crime-fighting superheroine Carol Danvers, who grew up in Boston, Mass. and asserted her independence by defying her father's desire that she find a husband and settle down.
Comic book author G. Willow Wilson shared her insights about the new Ms. Marvel with The Stream, discussing how she hopes this character will provide a "richer tapestry" of what it means to be Muslim in America, apart from "the political aspects that we see drummed up so often on TV and the news."
