Canada and Russia battle for the North Pole
Russian president Vladimir Putin has called for increased military presence in the Arctic following Canada's moves to legally claim control of the North Pole.
Last week, Canada submitted a partial application to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, hoping to extend its nautical borders and gain control of the unclaimed North Pole. International law currently gives the Arctic's five surrounding countries (Canada, Russia, the U.S., Norway and Denmark) ownership of the area 200 miles out from their northern coast.
