The largest prisoner hunger strike in California’s history is currently underway. Organized by a group of prisoners in the Pelican Bay State Prison, an estimated 29,000 inmates across the state have refused to eat since Monday to protest what they say are inhumane conditions. The highest on their list of grievances is a policy of solitary confinement which inmates call “state-sanctioned torture.”
Dozens held rallies and vigils to show support for the hunger strikers.
