Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto delivered the first
Primer Informe , or first report, of his term on Monday. The speech, equivalent to the U.S. "State of the Union" address, was given under the backdrop of
protests that saw some violence this weekend.
The hashtags
#1SMx ("1SeptMx"),
#1erInformedeGobierno ("Government's1stReport") and
#CNTE (referring to Mexico's teachers union) are trending in the county.
Protesters claim that Nieto's platform for transforming Mexico has paid little dividends. Twitter users reacted to the speech by outlining their problems with the President's first term, focusing on education reform, privatization plans, and the country's drug war.

Peña Nieto bucked tradition in his speech, opting to give it from his home in Los Pinos, instead of the presidential National Palace.
Edgar S says: "This time he didn't take a dip in the national university (la Ibero), no he decided to hide at Los Pinos for his #FirstReport... So proud of the president #oknot @EPN (Enrique Peña Nieto)"

The national palace has been under siege by teachers for more than one week.

The Stream's international sister show,
@AJStream , covered the teachers' protests early into their demonstrations:

While the teacher protests have been primarily peaceful, there were reports of violence from several Mexican accounts. Yesterday, several claimed that tear gas was used by Mexican police, but those reports were later retracted.

In this picture, posted by Anonymous Mexico, there were additional claims that the violence was caused by infiltrators to the teachers' cause: These are the infiltrators! Stay away from them! #Anonymous #1SeptMx.

The
#YoSoy132 ("I am the 132" student movement) reported that 23 people were detained by Mexican police during the protest:

The student movement also posted images of students and teachers marching together.

Many online supporters of the teachers' union mocked the president. This image says, "The truth is that I don't understand the teachers... ever since I went to elementary school!" It is accompanied by the following tweet: Kids, Henry Monster Peña does NOT understand teachers... ever since he went to elementary school. #1SeptMx San Lázaro .

Identical tweets congratulating the President were posted from several accounts affiliated with the President's political party:

However, most of the latest activity on Twitter continues to be critical of the president. o.B. says: "I suggest setting aside a percentage [of the budget] for the applause teleprompter operator. Without him, this country would be nothing. #FirstReport"
RT@juanjosesolis: Sugiero destinar un porcentaje de aplausos al operador del teleprompter. Sin él, este país no sería nada.#PrimerInformeo.B.
