Today a group of about 32-35 undocumented immigrants known as the Dream 30 were detained after a public attempt to cross the US-Mexico border near Laredo, Texas. The activists had previously resided in the United States, but were either deported or returned to Mexico under circumstances such as the death or illness of a loved one. The crossing, organized by the National Immigrant Youth Alliance (NIYA), was calling attention to the record levels of deportations under the Obama administration, though participants were also seeking legal relief for their personal status issues. Some were also seeking asylum.
