Unlike the
Dream 9 , the Dream 30 includes minors among the crossers, the youngest of whom are 13-year-old Ingrid Gallegos and her 16-year-old sister, Jessica. Some expressed
concern about the involvement of children in the border action, citing dangerous conditions in immigration detention centers and complications the action would place on their status.
.@dcbennion Do you sanction presenting minors to border jails given this report by one of your own advocates? http://twitter.com/susanpai/status/384682331266883584/photo/1Susan Pai
The hypocrisy inherent in electing a young child to be thrust into these deplorable circumstances, separating her from her family, in order to use her as their tool to make a statement against separating families is sickening.tucsoncitizen.com
@stephenanuno @aurabogado @ricardonotes @susanpai Has a preliminary app 4 parole been filed?Its unconscionable 2send minors in2 ICE custodyDavid Leopold
One journalist covering the border action countered that parole applications for the minors were filed in advance of the crossing.
@DavidLeopold @stephenanuno @aurabogado @ricardonotes @susanpai The attorney filed the applications last friday for all. I wrote about itPilar Marrero
The Dream 30's border action is a larger follow-up to the Dream 9's attempted crossing last month. Currently the Dream 9 are
awaiting hearings before immigration judges for asylum claims. Statistically, both the Dream 9 and Dream 30 have little chance at being granted asylum, as applications from Mexican nationals have a less than 1% approval rate.
