Attorney General Holder's opinion that voter ID laws may be racist was the main point of contention among those debating the lawsuit.
There is nothing racist about the application of voter ID laws, since EVERYONE must present ID to get one. It's called "equal application"Michelle Ray
There wasn't a push for voter ID until Black folk started voting more than usual.T. Brown
ID is the first of many pieces of this law. Others include reduced early voting, no Sunday voting, fewer places to vote, and more - all designed to cut down on minority voting. I personally have no problem with ID. It is the other 20 or so designed to keep targeted voters from voting -- the opposite of a democracy.Lyn Hankins
Others focused on the effects the voter ID law will have on the elderly.
How will a 90-105 year old get an ID without a birth certificate or social security card. Back in their time you didn't have documentation as we do now. Hell some of them aren't sure of their birth year bc of that reason. I think there should be some previsions to this law of restriction Tanija Rhame
Well, I am a "low-income white" and I receive no public assistance and when it comes time to vote, I have no problem getting there on election day, never have. As for the 90-105 year olds...your example would be such a small percentage, I say give 'em free reign, they've earned it!Chris Seitz
Conservatives brought up issues surrounding the lawsuit they believe are less emphasized in media coverage. A few mentioned the DOJ is trying to overturn the wishes of a majority of North Carolina voters, who supported the stricter voter ID laws in a
2012 poll .
Settled laws the media are okay overturning -- NC Voter ID law. Btw, Voter ID is 80/20 issue in favor of.John Nolte

Others alluded to the Obama administration's perceived political motivations behind challenging North Carolina's law, saying it is in the best interest of Democrats in order to maintain power.
But please, tell me again how #racist #voterID is. Please.instagram.com

One Twitter user tried to frame the lawsuit in an international sense, showing the disparity between the Obama administration's decisions abroad versus those at home.

Edmund Starowicz argued the Obama administration should help voters get photo IDs rather than sue the state:
@BarackObama sues North Carolina over voter ID . Instead of suing why not try 2 help minorities get photo ID's to meet the law. @FoxNewsEdmund Starowicz
Meanwhile, Marsha Hoogsteen
commented that North Carolina could take steps to solve the photo ID issue:
NC can fix this very easily by making IDs free to anyone who needs them for voting purposes.facebook.com
