The ethics of investigative journalism were front and center over the weekend after ESPN's Grantland published an article about a "magical putter" created by a "Dr. V." The writer, Caleb Hannan, was accused online of contributing to the suicide of the article's subject when he uncovered that Dr. Essay Anne Vanderbilt ("Dr. V") was once Stephen Krol. In the story, "Dr. V" had asked Hannan to "focus on the science and not the scientist," but by the end of the article, which dedicated large swaths of text to the investigation of Vanderbilt's identity and fabrications of Vanderbilt's story, Hannan admitted that he was now "writing a eulogy."
