Philadelphia teen fears infertility after encounter with police

Philadelphia police have launched an internal investigation after assertions that a Jan. 7 encounter with an officer left 16-year-old Darrin Manning with a ruptured testicle, potentially leaving him infertile.

According to local reports, Manning and his friends were on their way to a school basketball game when they were confronted by police. The teen's account of events includes allegations of sexual assault by a female officer, including a charge that she pulled his genitals so hard during a pat-down that he felt a pop. According to hospital records, Manning was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery the night after his arrest.

The details of what led to the confrontation and Manning's arrest remain unclear. A police report says he fought with officers, and the teen faces charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Many witnesses corroborate Manning's account that police use of force was excessive, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Some Philadelphia residents are planning to support him at his first status hearing on Thursday.
