A Florida bill that would make bullying punishable by up to one year in jail was approved by a state Senate committee Wednesday, setting the bill up for a vote to take place this month.

Rebecca's Law is named for 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick, who committed suicide last year after being harassed by fellow students.

The local police department charged two girls who had bullied Sedwick with aggravated stalking — the first time that charge was used in a bullying case. The charges were ultimately dropped, which prompted many Floridians to call for anti-bullying legislation.
