Can Google Fiber really help bridge the digital divide?
As the Internet increasingly becomes an essential component of modern life, people are demanding it be faster and more accessible. Some cities across America have taken it upon themselves to deliver speedy service to their residents – some by building their own, others by wooing Google to install Google Fiber, its high-speed fiber optic Internet service.
After rolling out Google Fiber in 3 cities – Kansas City, Mo., Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah – the company announced in February that 9 metro areas – 34 cities in total – were the next candidates.
