Chicago teachers boycott standardized tests

Residents rally against standardized testing in Chicago Public Schools

About 40 teachers at Chicago Public Schools boycotted a state-issued standardized test Tuesday by refusing to administer the test to third- through eighth-grade students. Teachers at Maria Saucedo Scholastic Academy say that students are tested too frequently and that testing fails to assess "actual academic performance." Others argue that the testing process takes away from valuable teaching time.

The Illinois Standards Achievement Test, which is being phased out in favor of new tests, is required by state law and is used by administrators to gauge a state's compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind law. The test was reportedly given to students, although it was unclear which faculty members distributed them.
